Cobham unveils lightweight 60 cm Ka-band antennas
NAUTICAL has been present at Cobham SATCOM world-wide presentation of its new generation of lightweight 60cm SAILOR 60 GX and SAILOR 600 VSAT Ka-band antennas at Lyngby (Denmark) in September 2015.
These antennas have been designed for High Throughput Satellites (HTS) services for Inmarsat Global Xpress and Telenor’s THOR 7 that are expected to be operative in December 2015.
These new version can be cheaper and easier to install than the 1 metre class antenna systems. Both SAILOR 60 GX and SAILOR 600 VSAT Ka-band antennas share the same design and carbon fibre composite/aluminium construction, weighing only 37 kgs. The new 60cm SAILOR VSAT range of systems requires a single cable between the antenna and below deck equipment for RF, power and data, and includes functionality for Automatic Azimuth Calibration and Automatic Cable Calibration as part of a ‘one touch commissioning’ process.
The use of Dynamic Motor Brakes inside the antennas removes the requirement for mechanical brake straps, ensuring antenna balance in no-power situations at sea or during transport.
By reducing the cost and complexity of installation and enabling the best RF performance, these antennas are opening the door for a more diverse maritime VSAT market including smaller vessels and recreational craft that can now consider moving to the high throughput broadband connectivity.
